In my paintings I am attempting to fuse a relationship between the subject, the paint, and my interpretation. It's a glorious feeling when we all get along. I strive to combine classical discipline with the fluidity that comes from allowing the paint to express itself.
"International Headquarters" of JanFrench.com are located in a studio in Los Osos, California (on the coast near Morro Bay). I have been an artist all of my life, starting with a crayon mural covering the back seats of my parents' late-1940s sedan, much to their dismay. My family background is loaded with artists, so it was inevitable. I studied at Pasadena City College, Mt. San Antonio Jr. College, New Mexico State University, and University of Texas El Paso. Independent study with: George Gibson, Don O'Neill, Jan Kunz, Art VanRhyn, and Ted Harpainter, among others. I have "created my own curriculum" over the years, following a consistent path toward learning the thinking behind the California Impressionists of the late 1800s, with the goal of reaching the essence of their vision so as to avoid formulaic imitation.
